What is Spiced Rum?
Spiced Rum is generally aged for a long time, almost a year which is just as long as black Rum. It has a sweet and spicy taste because of the spices and caramel flavouring.
Spiced Rum is often available in the market with different flavours such as vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. It is consumed more as a party drink. Spiced Rum is generally based on gold rum and is dark in colour.
There are many types of Spiced Rum in the market, but you should always buy your Spiced Rum from a trusted brand.
How is Spiced Rum made?
Big brand names distil the Rum from sugar cane. The characteristic flavour of the Rum is determined by a variety of criteria like the type of yeasts used for fermentation, distillation methods, aging conditions and blending process. Usually made with molasses, water, yeast, and mash, Spiced Rum is distilled in a continuous still. After that, it is aged in barrels of oak for almost a year. This aging process adds a golden colour and a solid character to the Rum. It is then infused with spices and herbs in the final stages of production. Flavours are varied, and include nutmeg, allspice, caramel, cinnamon stick, star anise, vanilla, oak barrel, coconut, apple and other fruit, just to name a few.
You can make it yourself!
Spiced Rum is also easy to make, and it can be made in your kitchen. Follow these simple steps and make your version of Spiced Rum!
Use any of your favourite rums, be it white Rum or gold rum as you prefer. Pour the bottle, about 750 ml of it, into a wide-mouthed jar or an airtight container. You can now add a selection of herbs and spices according to your preference.
We recommend you add vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, slices of orange, cloves, black peppercorns, ground nutmeg, allspice berries, and some ginger to the Rum. Add them to suit your taste.
After you mix the spices, you need to rest the Rum for about two days. You can leave it for the third day if you prefer more flavour and voila! Your Spiced Rum is ready to drink.
History of Spiced Rum
Adding spices and fruits to barrels of Rum is not a new thing. This has been done for centuries. Distillers have blended their Rum with different types of spices over the years. Back in the day, infusing the raw drink with spices was one of the easiest ways to make it palatable. Almost any edible plant could make its way into the Spiced Rum!
Especially in the Caribbean, distillery owners have been adding different types of spices to the Rum for a long time. Later in the 1980s, it was a brand named ‘Captain Morgan' who came up with ‘The Original Spiced Rum' which went on to become extremely popular both in local and world circles. This gave instant popularity to Spiced Rum, and it made its way to bars and liquor stores throughout the world. Since then, the flavours of Rum have been standardised to a great extent.
Types of Spiced Rum
Spiced Rums are usually available in a variety of flavours, depending on the infused spices, herbs, or fruits. You can choose from a vast collection of Spiced Rums ranging across all brands. Spiced Rum production around the world
You'll find companies that create Spiced Rum in Australia and Barbados, and there's Caribbean Rum from St Lucia, Puerto Rican Rum, Rum from the United States and Jamaica. Also, Spiced Rum production has increased considerably in recent years in sugar-producing countries like the Philippines and India. This makes the manufacturing cost of Rum economical, so some types of Rum are available at cheaper rates and it's generally not as expensive compared to other alcohol or spirits.
How to drink Spiced Rum?
You can enjoy a glass of Spiced Rum neat or add a dash of lime and have it on the rocks. Many brands recommend that you drink it as a chilled shot, to enjoy it the most.
You can also use Rum while cooking your favourite dishes. Combine Spiced Rum with any dishes that need to have a flavour of cinnamon, clove, or nutmeg. Great mixes include soda and orange peel, ginger beer, cola and fresh lime juice.
Almost all major Rum brands have introduced a spiced variant in the last few years, owing to its massive popularity. A great way to drink this is chilled on ice. But there are other options as well.
Coke: Rum and Coke have been a popular mix for a long time, but it is often made with white Rum. Change it up and mix your Spiced Rum. The mouth-watering flavour of vanilla and cinnamon blend almost naturally with the evergreen Coke.
Apple Cider: Apple cider and apple juice both mix well with Spiced Rum. If you've not had it before, give it a shot and see what you think.
Ginger Beer: A generous mixture of dry Ginger Beer along with Spiced Rum is sure to give you a kick! 4:1 is the perfect ratio, with more ginger beer, though you might like to test your palate.
Cold Brew: Spiced Rum with your favourite coffee makes it exciting. A touch of cream, Spiced Rum, and coffee can be a delicious drink! This is a sure-shot way to make even the blandest coffee a bit interesting.
Iced Tea: Iced tea certainly tastes better with Spiced Rum and it gives it a completely new personality. To make it more distinct, add Spiced Rum to a mixture of 50-50 iced tea and lemonade.
Pineapple Juice: Spiced Rum tastes amazing with any tropical fruit juice! Make your pineapple juice truly delicious by adding Spiced Rum and giving it a good shake to make it frothy!
Lemonade: Lemonade adds a lot of flavour to the Spiced Rum's vanilla and cinnamon flavours. However, if you prefer a sweeter drink, you can opt for a sweet lemonade and mix it with Spiced Rum.
