What is flavoured gin?
For a spirit to be called a type of gin, the spirit must officially contain a prevailing aroma and flavour of juniper. This non-negotiable. Flavoured gin comes with categories as not all flavoured gin is created in the same way. The first category is a signature botanical style. This refers to when and how the flavour is added. Botanicals in this style are added after distillation and often via maceration or other means. This kind of flavoured gin normally takes on the colour as well as the flavour of the added ingredients but must still have a prevailing aroma and taste of juniper. Usually, gin is a clear spirit of roughly 40% alcohol or 80 proof with a minimum bottled strength of 37.5%, and that will have been obtained through grain distillation and juniper berries.
How to drink flavoured gin?
Flavoured gin is a relatively new craze with both traditional and popular distilleries, as well as smaller and more boutique distilleries, all experimenting with a variety of herbs and flavours to deliver a signature gin experience. You’ll find everything from strawberry to citrus, Australian outback herbs and traditional spices used in flavoured gin. Just to make sure that you’re nice and confused, gin liqueur is a separate thing altogether. Sloe gin, for example, is not actually produced in a way that allows itself to be marketed as an official gin and will usually have less alcoholic content and does not use juniper as its primary scent or flavour.
Drinking gin, however, is easy and especially so when you’re considering our wide range of botanically infused varieties. The best way to really enjoy and experience your flavoured gins is to drink them as they were intended – straight. As a gentle sipping spirit, you can easily match your flavours with whatever you’re eating or enjoy it as a delicate beverage on its own.
If you’re a fan of gin cocktails, then flavoured gins are your best friend. When designing a cocktail, try to keep complementary flavours together so if you have a ginger flavoured gin then consider mixing it with ginger beer to really enhance the flavours. Similarly, if it’s a strawberry flavoured gin then consider a rich and fruity berry-based cocktail that celebrates the already infused flavours. Gin and grapefruit go particularly well together to produce a tart taste and very dry drink.
What food can be served with flavoured gin?
Flavoured gins pair very nicely with a wide selection of meals including smoked and cured meats, strong cheeses, fish seafood and lamb, particularly lamb curry. Cucumber sandwiches are also a traditional and winning favourite.
For sweeter tasting flavoured gins, consider pairing your glass with a sweet dessert like a mixture of sweet berries or a tart and citrusy cake.
If you’re looking for a way to pass a lazy afternoon with the people you love, then consider a fruit and cheese platter with well-matured strong cheeses and peppery crackers. If you’re feeling experimental and you have some particularly interesting botanicals that you’re playing with, consider some goat’s cheese and smoked cheeses to balance out the intense flavours.
