Sparkling red wine was first produced in Australia in 1878, and it was made to reflect the wines traditionally found in the Champagne region. While many of these initial wines tasted very similar to the European way of making wines, it was soon developed into a unique Australian process. This was probably driven by fierce rivalries among the two largest wine producing states (South Australia and Victoria) to have the best wines on the market.
We now have a sparkling red wine that offers a deep red colour and a complex flavour combination. Traditionally these are made with Shiraz grapes, as that is the most common red grape variety grown in Australia. But you can also find lighter colour versions that use Pinot Noir and other red varieties. Generally, sparkling wine is fermented twice, once during the brewing process, like most other wines, and again inside the bottle, and that is what gives the wines their bubbly appearance.
At BoozeBud we have a great collection of sparkling red wines to choose from and any of these would be brilliant to help you at your next celebration, or to simply introduce a little pizzazz to your afternoon lunch! One of the most popular sparkling reds we have come from the Pepperjack winery. If you're looking for a more traditional red wine that still offers just that little bit extra, try something from Fifth Leg, or Jacob’s Creek. If you need to order more than wine for an event, we also have an excellent selection of beer, brandy, gin, liqueurs, rum, vodka, and whiskey.
How do you serve sparkling red wine?
Sparkling red wine is best served chilled. It is ideal to have it resting in a bucket of ice water to keep it at the appropriate temperatures during pours. To work out how much wine you’ll need for an event, consider that a bottle will be enough for 5-6 glasses and most people will have two glasses per meal. This means that for a guest list of ten people you’ll need about four or five bottles. In most cases, it is good to have at least a red and white wine on offer, and even though you can match wine to what you’re serving most people will have a preference for one or the other.
Should sparkling red wine be chilled?
On a hot day, nothing quite hits the spot like a chilled sparkling red wine. For the best results, all sparkling wine should be served cold, or at about 4oC-6oC. The easiest method to get the wine to the right temperature is in a suitable refrigerator. You’ll need to place the bottle in the fridge for about four hours, and as most fridges operate at 4oC you can leave it in there for longer if required; many people choose to leave all their sparkling wines in the fridge overnight.
Is sparkling red wine healthy?
When compared to other wines, especially sweet variations like Moscato and Riesling, sparkling red wine is quite healthy. It is usually made from red wine grapes; this includes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and several others. Although it is a sparkling wine you still get the same benefits that you would from any other wine. While it is never good to overdo it, a couple of glasses each night is more than okay. Some of the benefits of drinking sparkling red wine include:
- An increased gut function - red wine, either sparkling or not, contains polyphenols as they are found in red grapes. These help to promote the growth of good gut bacteria. Having good gut bacterial diversity, also known as the microbiome, is essential for our health. It aids in keeping our immune systems functional and produces essential vitamins.
- Improved heart health - all red and white wines are brilliant for helping out your heart. In red grapes, you’ll find resveratrol, which is a powerful antioxidant that can aid in reducing any inflammation around your heart. The polyphenol that is in red grapes can also aid in reducing any blood clots by strengthening the arterial linings in your blood vessels. All wine grapes contain traces of copper and that can aid your body by reducing any issues caused by high blood pressure.
- Giving your skin a helping hand - all sparkling wine contains carbon dioxide and this can help rejuvenate your skin. Carbon dioxide has been used as a treatment for the causes of stretch marks as it can aid in increasing the elasticity of the skin.
- Increasing cognitive functionality - due to the phenolic acid, you’ll find in most sparkling wines, you may feel an increase in your memory retention, spatial awareness, and other cognitive abilities. It has been reported that drinking sparkling wines can delay the onset of dementia and other brain related debilitating conditions.
